Sometime in the future in an abandoned factory 9-year old Alan Hakman (Casey Dubois) goads his friend Louis Hunt (Liam Ranger) into walking on a plank high above the floor. Louis falls to his death. The adult Alan (Robin Williams) is still traumatized by the event. He now works for a company called Eye Tech that makes Zoe microchips. These are implanted in every citizen to record their memories. Hakman is a cutter who removes the implants from the deceased and edits the recording into a Rememory shown to the surviving family. When Eye Tech lawyer Charles Bannister (Michael St. John Smith) dies Hakman discovers images of his childhood friend on Bannister’s chip. Anti-chip activist Fletcher (James Caviezel) offers a huge sum of money for the chip to find unsavory information on it to use to discredit the program. But Hakman wants to find more images of his friend and refuses to turn it over. When Delila (Mira Sorvino) accidentally destroys the chip Hakman sets out to retrieve the information from other sources to find out the truth about his friend. In the process Hakman discovers that he himself carries an illegal chip.
