'Girl With A Pearl Earring' portrays the fictional 17th century story behind the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer's (Colin Firth) famous painting 'Girl with a Pearl Earring'. Griet (Scarlett Johansson) is a poor farm girl who is forced to become a maid for Vermeer to pay off a family debt. Griet is a devoutly religious, and quiet young woman, whose beauty captures the eyes of not only Vermeer but of his wealthy patron, Van Ruijven. Van Ruijven commissions Vermeer to capture Griet on canvas with hopes of capturing her virginity before the painting is through. Vermeer's wife is filled with jealousy towards Griet and refuses to allow her to be alone with her husband. So in order for Vermeer to be paid, Griet must pose in secret and go against her religious convictions. But what is to become of her once the painting is finished?
