It’s freshman year for a group of students at New York’s School for the Performing Arts, and teenaged angst is rampant. Leroy (Gene Anthony Ray) is illiterate, a fact he won’t admit to his English teacher, Ms. Sherwood (Anne Meara) who hounds him for his homework. Coco (Irene Cara) wants Bruno (Lee Curreri) to perform with her. Bruno’s father can’t understand why he doesn’t want to play his music in public. Doris (Maureen Teefy) feels plain and ordinary and befriends Montgomery (Paul McCrane). Sophomore year brings new student, Hillary (Antonia Franceschi) who clashes with Coco and seduces Leroy. Montgomery comes out of the closet. Lisa (Laura Dean) is dropped from the dance program and switches to drama. Junior year Doris becomes involved with Ralph (Barry Miller). Doris loses some of her inhibitions and decides to become an actress. As a senior Ralph tries stand-up comedy and bombs. Hillary is offered a chance to join to San Francisco Ballet but is pregnant. Leroy and Ms. Sherwood finally make peace, and Coco is approached by a sleazy man who says he’s a director.
