Akeelah Anderson (Keke Palmer) is an African-American girl living in South Los Angeles, a rather poor and troubled neighborhood. However, through a school spelling bee, attended by the marvelous Dr Larabee (Laurence Fishburne), Akeelah discovers her great ability to spell out an innumerable number of words from the English language. Under the instruction of Dr. Larabee, Akeelah begins training for the National Spelling Bee, despite objections from her mother (Angela Bassett) and ridicule from the rest of the town. Can one girl's dream for national glory overcome the opinions of thousands of others? And how will a girl from a troubled city defeat the most prestigious and well-trained brainiacs in the nation?
