As the head chef at an expensive restaurant, Kate Armstrong (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is used to getting her way. Her food reflects her lifestyle, where everything is meticulously planned and controlled. However, her life is suddenly turned upside down when her sister is killed in a car accident, leaving her to care for her young niece, Zoe (Abigail Breslin). At the same time that Kate is trying to find a way to work nights while looking after Zoe, a new sous-chef is hired at the restaurant. Nick Palmer (Aaron Eckhart) is young and brash, and is almost the polar opposite of Kate. Nonetheless, when Zoe is brought to the restaurant as an alternative to babysitters, she and Nick hit it off. Despite her initial dislike for Nick, Kate is impressed by his fondness for Zoe, and must wrestle to find her true feelings.
