Margot Zeller (Nicole Kidman) is a successful writer with some neurotic tendencies. Her free-spirited sister Pauline (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is about to get married to unemployed artist Malcolm (Jack Black). Margot speeds off with her eleven year old son Claude (Zane Pais) in tow to visit Pauline just before the wedding. The visit is a surprise, as the sisters have been estranged for some time. Pauline is light-hearted and care-free, the total opposite of Margot, who is intense and razor-tongued. When Margot arrives, she brings a little chaos with her, as she completely disapproves of the union. She begins to plant seeds of doubt about the wedding, causing many complications to Pauline’s plans as well as her life.
