April Apner (Helen Hunt), a schoolteacher, has a midlife crisis. Everything in her life seems to be going wrong. Her husband (Matthew Broderick) leaves her. And, her adoptive mother passes away. Trying to come to grips with her changing life, she meets her biological mother (Bette Midler), an outgoing, eccentric and over-the-top talk show host. April has an affair with one of her student’s fathers (Colin Firth). Things become even more complicated when she turns up pregnant and her ex-husband wants back in her life. Whose baby is it? With so many people tearing her in different directions, will she find happiness?
