One day a huge explosion occurred in the sky of Washington, spreading over the remains of the space shuttle Patriot. The authorities quickly put the situation under control, but strange rumors arrive: an unknown substance would has been found glued to the fragments of the shuttle. This substance would actually be highly toxic, and able to withstand extreme temperatures. And the first person that took contact with it would not be human any more. Shortly after the crash, Carol (Nicole Kidman) several aberrant phenomena. For example, one of her patients complains that her husband has been "changed. She asks herself why so many people across the country are affected, and why city streets are becoming so quiet, as if nobody dare get out of their houses anymore. And more: Oliver (Jackson Bond), the youngest son of Carol, brings the day of Halloween a candy with a substance that seems alive.
