As an 11 year old during the El Salvador civil war, Chava (Carlos Padilla) sees it all on a daily basis. His father leaves the family high and dry and Chava is now the man of the house. His mother Kella (Leonor Varela) and his sister are trying to lead as normal a life as possible. Chava will soon have a birthday, he will be 12 and that is a dangerous age because he will now be old enough to join the army. He and his classmates conspire to be absent when the recruiters arrive at their school. However, the war closes in on the town and Chava faces more danger every day.
