The events in The Lodger takes place in the contemporary Los Angeles and is composed of two parallel stories. The first involves the difficult relationship between the emotionally unstable landlady Ellen Bunting (Hope Davis) and the enigmatic owner named Malcolm (Simon Baker). The second involves a game of cat and mouse between the detective Chandler Manning (Alfred Molina) and an unknown criminal that imitates Jack the Ripper’s operating style. Irritated by the frequent noises that come from apartment 16 and not getting a satisfactory response to his complaints, Mr. Weeks decides to solve the problem on his own. He discovers a secret that could be the answer to the mysterious disappearances of people.
