A detective named Dave Robicheaux (Tommy Lee Jones), who has many years of experience, must try to find a path through the bayous in Louisiana and the mob world of New Orleans. He is trying to find a gangster named Balboni (John Goodman) and is also investigating several killings. During the course of his searches, Robicheaux uncovers many secrets from the past, as well as a lot of corruption. Much of this becomes personal for both the detective and the Robicheaux family. A dangerous alliance, some old grudges, and an increasing number of murders all lead up to a frightening confrontation.
